Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra

The Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra offers plenty of camera upgrades in a built-in S Pen, a bright display, and a sleek design.

This Galaxy S22 Ultra review shows that Samsung knows how to build a flagship phone for power users by adding the best features of the Galaxy Note and offering many other upgrades. Yes, there is a built-in S Pen, but there is more to this flagship as Samsung strives to be at the top of our list of best phones.

For starters the S Pen is more responsive as Samsung has made it 70% faster with less delays. The display is brighter and more colorful than anything we have experienced and you get 45W faster charging.

The biggest upgrades in the Galaxy S22 Ultra come with its cameras, as Samsung is trying to overtake the iPhone 13 Pro Max and Google Pixel 6 Pro as the best camera phones with the help of several upgrades. Is. They include a large central sensor for better low-light images, AI-powered portrait mode, and a new super-clear lens.

Samsung, on the other hand, is demanding a hefty sum ($ 1,199) for a phone that now comes with less RAM than before, and the S22 Ultra costs $ 100- $ 300 more than its main competitors.

Based on my tests, the Galaxy S22 Ultra is the best Android phone that can be bought with money, if not the best phone overall.

Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra cheat sheet

Best phone display yet:

The Galaxy S22 Ultra AMOLED panel is not only brighter than the competition, which makes it ideal for outdoor viewing, but it also offers better color saturation.

The S Pen is better:

By reducing the delay by 70%, writing on the Galaxy S22 Ultra and drawing feels as smooth as pen and paper. And there's a built-in holster.

Better photos in low light:

Thanks to a larger main sensor, the Galaxy S22 Ultra provides brighter images than the S21 Ultra, and Night Mode works better than the iPhone 13 Pro Max in some cases.

Longer support:

Samsung has promised five years of update support and four years of major OS updates, so this flagship should be able to last a long time.

Battery life could be better:

We only saw more than 10 hours of endurance on its web browsing battery test. That's fine, but the iPhone 13 Pro Max is more than 12 hours behind.

Sleek and durable design:

The Galaxy S22 Ultra is protected by an armored aluminum frame and Gorilla Glass Victus + back, and yet it is lighter than the iPhone 13 Pro Max without any reliable markings. However, some may not like curved screens.

45W charging is fast:

The phone reached 67% in 30 minutes, no faster than 25W (58%).

Samsung S22 Ultra releasing and price

The Galaxy S22 Ultra starts at $ 1,199 in its 8GB / 128GB configuration. It costs $ 1,299 for up to 256 GB, $ 1,399 for 512 GB, and $ 1,599 for 1 TB.

Available for purchase right now, the Galaxy S22 Ultra comes in black, white, and green, but also the burgundy color option. Online you can get the biggest phones in graphite, sky blue and red.

  Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra design

The Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra is simple but impressive at the same time. I appreciate the sharp, square angles, and I also like that the cameras aren't pitted. They are more flush than the back of the phone. The overall look is very good.

Another plus: the 6.8-inch screen has a smooth curve, so it adds some aesthetic appeal without accidentally pressing down on the screen. My only complaint is that sometimes typing words or moving the cursor to the far left or right of the screen can be a challenge. Despite having a slightly larger screen than the 6.7-inch iPhone 13 Pro Max, the S22 Ultra is lighter at 8.07 ounces than 8.5 ounces for Apple's phone.

The Galaxy S22 Ultra feels solid and durable, and it should, as it is reinforced with an armored aluminum frame and gorilla glass Victus + back. However, we need to see how well this phone survives the drop test.

Colors options are Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra amazing Phantom Black - Phantom White - Green and Burgundy. I don't use the case so I'd probably go for the shiny white model.

Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra display

Samsung has just improved the display quality with the Galaxy S22 Ultra. As before, you get 120Hz dynamic refresh rate, which allows smooth scrolling during our practice time. And the 240Hz touch sampling rate is something that gamers should appreciate.

But there are two notable display improvements. The first is that the screen has a maximum brightness of 1,750 nits, which may be the brightest we've ever seen.

The second screen perk is a new vision booster feature, which can adjust the brightness of the screen throughout the day. This means you should have no trouble using the S22 Ultra outdoors, even in very bright sunlight.

I took the Galaxy S22 Ultra to Bryant Park with the iPhone 13 Pro Max and Google Pixel 6 Pro, and when I turned on the Reacher trailer, the screen of the Galaxy S22 Ultra was significantly brighter than the two rival phones.

Dr. While watching the trailer of Strange and the Multiverse of Madness, the panel of this Galaxy S22 Ultra showed smooth motion during action scenes as well as full color and wide viewing angles.

The Galaxy S22 Ultra panel also impressed in our lab tests, reaching a very high peak of 1,359 nits, compared to 1,038 nits on the iPhone 13 Pro Max and 842 nits on the Google Pixel 6 Pro.

Furthermore, the Galaxy S22 Ultra outperformed the competition in color reproduction, scoring 137.5% and 97.4% in both sRGB and DCI-P3 tests, while 109.3% / 77.4% and 104.2% / for the iPhone 13 and Pixel Pro. 73.8%. 6 Pro respectively.

The only thing that got behind the S22 Ultra iPhone was the color accuracy, which got a Delta-E score of 0.25 (where 0 is perfect). The iPhone 13 Pro Max reached 0.21.

Many users (though not us) have noticed a potential problem with the screen of the S22 Ultra which is getting their devices quickly. These units produce weird static banding on the screen, but the problem is limited to devices powered by Exynos, and Samsung has promised to fix that.

Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra S Pen

The Galaxy S22 Ultra has the smoothest S Pen you've ever experienced, and that's because Samsung has reduced the latency from 9 milliseconds to just 2.8ms. So you're getting 70% improvement here.

Best of all, you don't have to use a silly case to store the S Pen as you did with the Galaxy S21 Ultra. The phone has an S Pen holder.

In addition, the Galaxy S22 Ultra uses AI to sense the movement of your hand to sense the pen and paper. When taking notes, not only does the writing feel smooth, but there is also a crisp sound that makes it look like you are writing on paper.

I compared the S22 Ultra and the S21 Ultra, and there is a noticeable difference in the response when typing on the screen. For example, when typing "this is the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra" I noticed that the words appear in real time on the S22 Ultra as I typed, while it felt like the S 21 Ultra is half a step back and trying to keep up. Pen

Samsung has made some notable improvements to the S Pen, including more accurate handwritten text conversions, as well as the ability to quickly save your notes in Microsoft Office documents and emails.

Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra cameras

Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra tops our list of best camera phones and seems determined to overtake Apple and Google. Our tests show that the S22 Ultra is a great camera phone, but it is a champion.

The Galaxy S22 Ultra has a large 2.4um pixel sensor for more light and data capture, as well as a super clear glass lens for capturing glare-free nighttime video. You get a 12MP ultra wide lens, plus two 10MP telephoto cameras that combine to offer 10x optical zoom and 100x space zoom. For more comparison, check out our low light photography comparison between Samsung Galaxy S22 and iPhone 13 Pro Max.

There is an inductive pixel technology for better images in the dark, better AI high resolution rendering, and 4x faster multi-frame rendering that combines 9 pixels into one.

While the S22 Ultra's night mode has been improved, I'm more impressed with the camera's low light performance without having to turn on night mode. Take this shot of a few Star Wars statues in very low ambient light. With the S21 Ultra, Darth Vader's helmet or Han Solo shoes or hair can barely be distinguished on the left. In S22 Ultrashot both become clearer and clearer.

In addition, artificial plant pots and green leaves are more prominent in the S22 Ultra image, as is the background painting.

The 10x Zoom of the Galaxy S22 Ultra is one of the best I've ever tried, as can be seen from this picture of a goose taken in a nearby park. The 30x zoom loses some detail and looks like a watercolor painting, but it's still nice that you can get close to it.

Overall, the Galaxy S22 Ultra impressed with this indoor photo of chrysanthemum flowers. Samsung's phone offers rich shades of purple, maroon and yellow. However, the iPhone 13 Pro Max offers a brighter shot on the petals and much better detail. The Pixel 6 Pro also beats the S22 Ultra, as your shot is more complimentary.

Samsung's S22 Ultra took the lead in this tri-shot. It offers a brighter image with a more vibrant green color than the iPhone 13 Pro Max. And because of these reflections, the picture becomes clearer, especially when you look at the crust. There is also better contrast.

The Galaxy S22 Ultra uses AI Stereo Depth Maps for better portraits. In the photo above, my shirt and jeans are sharp and the background is technically blurred. Just as important, the color of my skin looks natural in the midday sun. Previous Samsung phones had a tendency to wash their faces when out in the sun.

Still, I prefer the iPhone 13 Pro Max here, as it offers a brighter, more dynamic shot. The blue, turquoise, orange and white of my shirt are more prominent. But the portrait of the S22 Ultra is better than the Pixel 6 Pro, which looks grainy.

I then took a selfie with the S22 Ultra's 40MP front camera and it produced an even brighter shot with good detail especially in my hair. The iPhone 13 Pro Max image once again captured the bright and realistic sunlight and shadows. You can also make more seams on my jacket. But I wouldn't say that a phone is clearly better here.

I would give the Pixel 6 Pro a slight advantage over the S22 Ultra over my selfies, as the sun's glare looks a bit more pleasing. But it is close.

The Galaxy S22 Ultra stood out with its night mode in this shot of the outdoor bench in almost complete darkness. Compared to the iPhone 13 Pro Max, the S22 Ultrashot has more visibility and brightness, from gray benches and green bushes to the surrounding mulch and bricks.

The Pixel 6 Pro does a great job of illuminating the light coming through the preview bushes, curtains and window that I saw with the naked eye. But I still prefer the S22 Ultra shot a bit here.

With Night Mode on, I shot these Star Wars figures one more time, and here's the thumbs up to the S22 Ultra. The iPhone 13 Pro Max shot is bright but matte. The S22 Ultra has more freshness in the blades and Darth Vader.

The Pixel 6 Pro produces a very bright image, but the film is visible throughout the image and there is very little contradiction.

The night mode of the Galaxy S22 Ultra was quite good in this picture of the bar cart taken in the near dark. In this photo, the S22 Ultra reveals the decoration on the glass bowl on the right side of the frame better than the iPhone 13 Pro Max. However, in the iPhone shot, the glass on the left and the Kettle One bottle look a little lighter.

The image of the Pixel 6 Pro is even brighter, but some of the details look a bit blurry. It's hard to call.

Samsung's cameras sometimes tend to over-color the colors, and the same is true with this S22 Ultra image of the product in the grocery store. Pears look more yellow than green, and the iPhone 13 Promax captures more realistic looking colors while gaining more texture in orange. The Pixel 6 Pro also goes for a more realistic look, but its image looks a bit washed out.

On a sunny day in this shot from Times Square, the Galaxy S22 Ultra struggled a bit. The sky is clearer, like the sun's hot buildings. The display looks a bit cramped, while the iPhone 13 Pro Max offers a deep blue in the sky without losing the clouds, and it's easy to pick up counter billboards and signs. The Pixel 6 Pro offers similar benefits right out of the box, but the picture as a whole looks flattering.

Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra video

The Galaxy S22 Ultra shoots video up to 8K at 24fps and can keep your footage extremely stable with its superior super-steady mode. And there are many additional features you can play with, such as video portrait mode.

To test the video quality of the S22 Ultra, I shot this video of a fountain in Bryant Park, and when I zoom in, the phone does a great job of getting the details in the water and springs, even with the zoom action. Why not yourself A little nervous

As you zoom in, you'll notice that the S22 Ultra captures a crisp blue sky and white clouds, and the glass building in the background is very detailed. The zoom mic feature also works well because you will notice that when I zoom in, the sound from the source gets louder.

Super Steady mode, which is at full HD and a maximum of 60 fps, provides smooth visuals even while walking fast on the Manasquan River. However, the video itself was not as colorful and colorful as I expected from filming the surrounding forests.

  Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra performance

The Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra is one of the first phones to run on Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 processor, a 4nm chip that promises better CPU and graphics performance while delivering more performance. Samsung will launch its 4nm Exynos 2200 chip in international markets.

With only 8GB of RAM, the Galaxy S22 Ultra feels extremely smooth for opening and closing apps. In fact, the S22 Ultra felt faster than the iPhone 13 Pro Max when switching on or off apps, as you can see in the TikTok video above.

The S22 Ultra also provided in-depth gameplay while zipping around the track in Drive Club gameplay and i also played Call of Duty Mobile. I did not feel any hiccups when taking down more than one enemy.

On the Geekbench 5, which measures overall performance, the Galaxy S22 Ultra scored a single-core score of 1240 and a multi-core score of 3392. The Galaxy S21 Ultra has a low single core score of 1123, but strangely, a multi-core score. A high score of 3440.

Geekbench told us there could be a problem with the S22 Ultra's processor and throttling with the test, so we'll let you know once it's resolved.

In terms of competition, the iPhone 13 Pro Max hit 1,720 / 4,549 on Geekbench and the Google Pixel 6 Pro hit 1,027 / 2,760.

Things improved dramatically in the 3DMark Wild Life Unlimited graphics test. The Galaxy S22 Ultra got a score of 9984 and a frame rate of 59.84fps. Compare that to the 5,739 / 34.4fps on the S21 Ultra. Still, the iPhone 13 Pro Max scored higher at 11,418 / 68.4 fps. The Pixel 6 Pro only got 6682 / 40fps.

Last but not least, we tested a video encoding using the Adobe Premiere Rush app, took a 4K video file and transcoded it to 1080p. The Galaxy S22 Ultra took a quick 47 seconds to complete the task, which is significantly better than the S21 Ultra's 1:02. iPhone 13 Pro Max takes only 25 seconds and Pixel 6 Pro was comparable  48 seconds.

For more information, check out our Galaxy S22 Ultra benchmark review, which includes machine learning benchmark results.

The Galaxy S22 Ultra starts with 128GB of ROM but I like to see 256GB as the base storage at a starting price of 1,199$. You can upgrade to 256GB - 512GB or 1TB when you purchase but not expandable storage via microSD slot.

If you're looking for the next generation of wireless you will be glad to know that the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra features Wi-Fi 6E connectivity which Samsung claims is twice as fast as Wi-Fi 6.

Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra about battery

The Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra is powered by a large 5000 mAH battery, which Samsung claims will last more than a day with normal use. We've run Tom's Guide battery test several times, with continuous web browsing on 5G at 150 nits screen brightness.

The best battery life ever for the Sansung S22 Ultra is more then 10 hours  with 60Hz. That's fine and this is far ahead of the Google Pixel 6 Pro's 7:55, but the runtime is 11 hours and 25 minutes behind what we saw on the S21 Ultra and the iPhone 13 Pro Max lasts even longer. ۔ : 16.

With the adaptive mode on the display turned on (scaling up to 120Hz), the S22 Ultra lasted until 8:50, which is lower than we expected. We will report with more results.

When it comes to backing up, the Galaxy S22 Ultra offers 45W charging, an improvement over the Galaxy S21 Ultra's 25W charging. Samsung promises to reach 50% in 20 minutes, which is about 10 minutes faster than the S21 Ultra.

We tested the 45W charger and it made our Galaxy S22 Ultra 36% in 15 minutes and 67% in 30 minutes. It's faster than a 25W charger with the same phone (29% / 58%), but not much difference.

  Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra software

The Galaxy S22 Ultra runs on Samsung's OneUI 4.1 software, running on Android 12. Samsung says the interface is more intuitive and useful than previous versions, and has a new privacy panel for peace of mind.

Samsung is also promoting Samsung Wallet, which can combine your digital payment information, ID, and more into one tool. The new Google Duo app lets you share videos and documents during video calls, just like SharePlay in Apple's iOS 15 software.

Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra review:

The Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra is the most powerful and versatile Android phone on the easily foldable side. It's the best screen we've ever experienced on a phone, and Samsung's cameras are much better, especially in low light. Also, the powerful zoom is still hard to beat.

Does the Galaxy S22 Ultra cost $ 300 more than the Google Pixel 6 Pro? This is not an easy decision. The S22 Ultra offers a brighter screen, longer battery life and a faster chip, but while the S Pen is faster and smoother than before, not everyone appreciates this advantage. And the camera quality of the Pixel 6 Pro is better in some respects.

Then there's the iPhone 13 Pro Max, which is faster than the S22 Ultra, lasts longer on charge, and offers better image quality (with the exception of low light shots). Still, I prefer the Galaxy S22 Ultra's sleek design and more powerful zoom.

Overall, the Galaxy S22 Ultra is the best premium Android phone and it is very close to being the best phone period.
