Twitter user iGPU Extremist recently shared photos of the upcoming Dell Precision 7670 laptop. Unfortunately, Dell seems to have developed a proprietary form factor for DDR5 memory, which the company has dubbed the Compression Attached Memory Module (CAMM). So the upgrade route is still there, but only through Dell.
The purpose behind CAMM is to provide a compact replacement for perhaps replacing two SO-DIMM memory slots. The image shows what a one-way module with 16 integrated circuits (ICs) looks like. The module has two zones with eight integrated circuits on each side. The layout should run in a dual channel configuration and indicate that CAMM is an alternative to Dell's two SO-DIMM memory slots. Additionally, Precision 7670 marketing materials show support for 128 GB DDR5-4800 memory via CAMM.
CAMM helps Dell simplify their laptop design while contributing to a slimmer and possibly lighter body. At first glance, this may seem like a better implementation than soldered memory. However, CAMM will effectively block users from memory upgrades unless they purchase directly from Dell. Profits will be lower because consumers can only choose from the deal offer. At the moment, it is unknown whether Dell will open the form factor for third-party memory vendors. If no other Dell CAMM band jumps on the wagon, consumers will have no choice but to pay the Dell premium.
Putting all the CAMM stuff aside, the Dell Precision 7670 is going to be a beautiful workstation. The laptop will benefit from Intel's 12th Gen Alder Lake-HX processors, which will likely offer desktop class performance at 55W. The leaked image points to the Core i9 chip from the Core i5 with eight Golden Cove cores.
As a workstation class laptop, the Dell Alder will pair the Lake-HX chip with Nvidia's RTX A5000 or Intel's Arc Pro 90W graphics card. Whatever the model, the graphics card will come in the form of Dell Graphics Form Factor (DGFF), a special version of Dell's Mobile PCI Express Module (MXM) that debuted with Alienware Area-51m.
The Dell Precision 7670 will be equipped with a 16:10 4K HDR500 OLED panel with a beautiful 16-inch screen. It features a narrow bezel design and features like 500 Night Brightness Level and 100% DCI-P3. Other notable features of the Precision 7670 include three M.2 slots up to 12TB with RAID support for PCIe 4.0 SSDs, a Pro 2.5 keyboard with large trackpad, camera shutter, proximity and ambient light sensor, and Intel connectivity. Includes Wi-Fi 6E.
The official release date and price of Precision 7670 are not known. However, given the feature set, the price of a workstation laptop will be much lower.
